Appallachian Spring.
Many decades from now, when I die, I want this piece to be played at my funeral.
I don't want any one to speak. I don't want any one to get up on a podium to say what sort of person I was, or what I did during my life.
I want (ideally an orchestra) this 30 minute ballet to be played in its entirety.
Why?
This piece, to me symbolizes life.
The ballet is about quakers, mostly about a quaker marriage.
It's both light, and sentimental.
It's joyful, and there are moments where it seems sad.
The hymn, which most people will recognize "simple gifts", is fitting for all of us.
It is trully the commonplace, the simple things that we can derive joy from.
