God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge. The serpent tempted Eve, who then tempted Adam. God found out and cast them both out of the garden, sending angels to gaurd the entrance. Some faiths believe that this knowledge was carnal, some believe was the knowledge of mortality... I like the gnostics. They believe that it was knowledge: The nature of the universe, god, self. The gnostics also believe in alot of other stuff that's hard for most to swallow. The belief that the god of the OT was evil. That Jesus was actually the serpent, that the original sin was of gods creation in the first place. The thought is, what if it was just knowledge in general that God didn't want us to partake of? Does this mean he wanted to keep us ignorance for eternity? Some believe that it was all planned like that, that man was meant to eat of the fruit of knowledge. I can see their perspective, though I don't agree with it. I personally look at it from two different ways, the first is the gnostic example; that god wanted us to remain ignorant. The other as a warning, we haven't actually partaken of the tree yet... but as a race we're soon going to, and it will destroy us.

Though there are numerous other options.
